Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground screws.
  2. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 3 under the following conditions. With ignition switch off, zero volts should exist. With ignition switch on, battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step  11. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off . Disconnect throttle control motor relay. Check voltage between ground and throttle control motor relay terminals No. 1 and 3. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step  5. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Check the following:
    • Fuse No. 70 (15-amp).
    • Harness for open and short between throttle control motor relay and battery.
Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
  5. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 3 and throttle control motor relay terminal No. 5. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step  7. If any problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors E1 and M11.
    • Harness connectors M33 and F22.
    • Harness for open and short between throttle control motor relay and ECM terminal No. 1.
Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
  7. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 104 and throttle control motor relay terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step  9. If any problem is found, go to next step.
  8. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors E1 and M1.
    • Harness connectors M33 and F22.
    • Harness for open and short between throttle control motor relay and ECM.
Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
  9. Apply battery voltage between throttle control motor relay terminals No. 1 and 2. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should exist with power applied. Continuity should not exist with power removed. If relay continuity is as specified, go to next step. If relay continuity is not as specified, replace throttle control motor relay.
  10. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect electric throttle control actuator harness connector. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between connectors. See ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL ACTUATOR HARNESS CONTINUITY  table. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair open circuit, short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL ACTUATOR HARNESS CONTINUITY

Electric Throttle Control Actuator Terminal No. ECM Terminal No. Continuity
    3 5 Should not exist
    3 4 Should exist
    6 5 Should exist
    6 4 Should not exist
  12. Remove the intake air duct. Check if foreign matter is caught between the throttle valve and the housing. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, remove the foreign matter and clean the electric throttle control actuator inside.
  13. Disconnect electric throttle control actuator harness connector. Check resistance between terminals No. 3 and 6. Resistance should be approximately 1-15 ohms at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  15.
  14. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  15. Replace electric throttle control actuator. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - PATHFINDER R article. Perform relearn. See PROGRAMMING .
