Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using generic scan tool, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition off then on. Select VENT CONTROL/V in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. Press ON/OFF. EVAP-CVCV should click. For EVAP-CVCV location, see Figure. If EVAP-CVCV clicks, go to step 7. If EVAP-CVCV does not click, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP-CVCV 2-pin harness connector. For EVAP-CVCV location, see Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP-CVCV harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 5.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E1 and M1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F22 and M33.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F27 and M94.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors B1 and M2.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors B43 and M101.
- Check underhood fuse block fuse No. 63 (10-amp).
- Check for open or short between EVAP-CVCV and ECM relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure. Check continuity of Green/Red wire between EVAP-CVCV harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 117. See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 7.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F27 and M94.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors B1 and M2.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors B43 and M101.
- Check for open or short between EVAP-CVCV and ECM.
- Disconnect hose from EVAP-CVCV. Check hose for blockage. If blockage is not found, go to next step. If blockage is found, clean with compressed air. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Remove EVAP-CVCV. Check for rust in port "B". See Figure. If rust does not exist, go to next step. If rust exists, replace EVAP-CVCV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using generic scan tool, go to step 11.
- Reconnect all harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Perform VENT CONTROL/V in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. When VENT CONTROL/V is ON, air should not flow between ports "A" and "B". When VENT CONTROL/V is OFF, air should flow between ports "A" and "B". It should take less than one second for valve to open or close. If operation is as specified, go to step 12. If operation is not as specified, clean EVAP-CVCV with compressed air, and retest. If operation is still not as specified, replace EVAP-CVCV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Disconnect EVAP-CVCV 2-pin harness connector. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage and ground to EVAP-CVCV terminals (component side). See Figure. With battery voltage applied, air should not flow between ports "A" and "B". Remove jumper wires. Air should flow. It should take less than one second for valve to open or close. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, clean EVAP-CVCV with compressed air, and retest. If operation is still not as specified, replace EVAP-CVCV. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
