Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in ENGINES.
  2. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure. After repair, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect appropriate CMP sensor (PHASE) 2-pin harness connector. CMP sensor (PHASE) is located on front engine cover facing the camshaft sprocket. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Black/White wire). Battery voltage should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system.
  4. Check continuity of Black wire between ground and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. ECM is located behind instrument panel lower cover. See Figure. Check continuity of Yellow/Green wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 33 and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 2 (Bank 1) or Orange wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 14 and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 2 (Bank 2). See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground or short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system.
  6. Loosen and remove CMP sensor (PHASE) retaining bolt. Remove sensor. Visually check CMP sensor for damage or chipping to sensor pick-up. Check resistance between CMP sensor terminals (component side). Check for continuity (resistance) between sensor terminals No. 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 3. If resistance exists (zero ohms or no continuity does not exist), go to next step. If zero ohms or no continuity exists, replace camshaft sensor.
  7. Inspect camshaft notches for any chipping or other problems. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace camshaft.
  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
