Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure. Go to next step.
- Disconnect 3-pin CKP sensor (POS) harness connector. CKP sensor is located at bottom front of bellhousing. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). Voltage should equal battery voltage. Also, check circuit for short to ground or short to voltage. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair circuit as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If any problem is found, repair circuit as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. ECM is located behind instrument panel lower cover. See Figure. Check continuity of Yellow wire between CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 13. See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair circuit as necessary.
- Remove CKP sensor (POS) retaining bolt. Remove CKP sensor. Visually check CKP sensor for damage or chipping to sensor pick-up. Check resistance between CKP sensor terminals (component side). Check for continuity (resistance) between sensor terminals No. 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 3. If resistance exists (zero ohms or no continuity does not exist), go to next step. If zero ohms or no continuity exists, replace CKP sensor.
- Inspect signal plate notches for any chipping or other problems. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace signal plate.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
