Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. ECM is located behind instrument panel lower cover. See Figure. Measure resistance between engine ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 15 (White wire). See Figure. Resistance should be about 500-620 k/ohms at 77°F (25°C). Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 5.
- Disconnect knock sensor 2-pin harness connector. Knock sensor is located on cylinder block, under intake manifold. Check continuity of White wire between knock sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 15. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 4.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connection in Sky Blue in-line harness 2-pin harness connector F19.
- Check for open or short between knock sensor and ECM.
- Measure resistance between ground and knock sensor terminal No. 1 (component side). Resistance should be 500-620 k/ohms at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to step 8. If resistance is not as specified, replace knock sensor.
- Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure. After repair, go to next step.
- Check continuity between engine ground and knock sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 8.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connection in Sky Blue in-line harness 2-pin harness connector F19. In-line harness connector is located on right side of engine compartment.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connection in in-line harness connectors F22 and M33.
- Check for open between knock sensor harness connector and engine ground.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
CAUTION:
Do not use any knock sensor that has been dropped or physically damaged.
