Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure. Loosen and retighten appropriate HO2S 1 to 30-44 ft. lbs. (40-60 N.m). See Figure or Figure . Go to next step.
  2. Start engine and let it idle. Check for exhaust leak before 3-way catalyst. Listen for intake leak after MAF sensor. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. If no problem is found, and testing is being done with CONSULT-II tester, go to next step. If no problem is found and testing is being done with a generic tester, go to step  4.
  3. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. On CONSULT-II, select WORK SUPPORT mode. Select SELF-LEARNING CONT. Clear self-learning control coefficient by pressing CLEAR. Let engine idle for at least 10 minutes. If 1st trip DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175 is detected and engine is difficult to start, perform diagnosis for DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175. See DTC P0171 OR P0174  or DTC P0172 OR DTC P0175  . If 1st trip DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175 is not detected and engine is not difficult to start, go to step  5.
  4. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor 5-pin harness connector. See Figure. Start engine and let it idle for at least 5 seconds. Turn ignition off. Reconnect MAF sensor harness connector. Using scan tool check that DTC P0102 is set. Clear DTCs. Start engine and let it idle for at least 10 minutes. If 1st trip DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175 is detected and engine is difficult to start, perform diagnosis for DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175. See DTC P0171 OR DTC P0174  or DTC P0172 OR DTC P0175  . If 1st trip DTC P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175 is not detected and engine is not difficult to start, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect HO2S 1 4-pin harness connector. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. ECM is located behind instrument panel lower cover. See Figure. On bank 1 sensor, check continuity of Green wire between HO2S 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 35. See Figure and Figure . For bank 2 sensor, check continuity of Green/Black wire between HO2S 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 16. Continuity should exist. Check for short to ground and short to voltage between ground and both circuits. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance between suspect HO2S 1 specified pigtail terminals. See CHECKING HO2S 1 RESISTANCE table. If resistance or continuity is as specified, connect all harness connectors and go to next step. If resistance or continuity is not as specified, replace HO2S 1.
    CHECKING HO2S 1 RESISTANCE

Measure Between Terminals No. Specification (Ohms)
    1 & 3 2.3-4.3 @ 77°F (25°C)
    1 & 2 No Continuity
    2 & 3 No Continuity
  7. CAUTION: DO NOT use ECM ground terminals when measuring voltage.
  8. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Backprobing, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 61 (Orange wire), with engine at specified speeds. See CHECKING MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. If voltage is as specified, connect disconnected components and go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, disconnect and reconnect MAF sensor harness connector and repeat test. If voltage is still not as specified, replace MAF sensor.
    CHECKING MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR VOLTAGE

    Condition Specification (Volts)
Ignition On, Engine Off About 1.0
    Idle 1.2-1.8
    2500 RPM 1.6-2.2
    Idle To 4000 RPM (1) 1.2-1.8 To About 4.0
    (1) Voltage should change smooth and steady, from lower to upper voltage value, with no glitches as engine speed is increased.
  9. With engine idling, remove PCV valve with vacuum hose connected. A hissing noise should be heard and a strong vacuum should be felt immediately when a finger is placed over valve inlet. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace PCV valve.
  10. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using generic scan tool, go to step  11.
  11. On CONSULT-II, select DATA MONITOR mode. Select MANU TRIG, and adjust TRIGGER POINT to 100%. Select HO2S 1 MNTR (B1)/(B2) and HO2S 1 MNTR (B1)/(B2). Hold engine speed at 2000 RPM. Press RECORD. The following should occur:
    • HO2S 1 MNTR (B1)/(B2) changes from RICH to LEAN to RICH 5 times in 10 seconds.
    • HO2S 1 (B1)/(B2) voltage goes above 0.6V at least once.
    • HO2S 1 (B1)/(B2) voltage goes below 0.3V at least once.
    • HO2S 1 (B1)/(B2) voltage never exceeds 1.0V.
If operation is as specified, go to step  12. If operation is not as specified, replace suspect HO2S 1.
  12. CAUTION: DO NOT use ECM ground terminals when measuring voltage.
  13. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 35 (bank 1) or No. 16 (bank 2). When increase engine speed to 2000 RPM, following should occur:
    • Voltage should cycle from less than 0.3 volt to more than 0.6 volt and back more than 5 times within 10 seconds.
    • Maximum voltage should be more than 0.6 volt at least once.
    • Minimum voltage should be less than 0.3 volt at least once.
    • Voltage should never exceed one volt.
If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace HO2S 1.
  14. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
