Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Check

  1. Check VSS Output

Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Remove VSS from transmission, leaving harness connector connected. On models with tachometer, using DVOM set to AC scale, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 47 (Red/Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. On models without tachometer, using DVOM set to AC scale, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 29 (Red/Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure or Figure . Quickly turn VSS pinion by hand. If voltage is about .5 volt, VSS is okay. If voltage is not about .5 volt, go to next step.
  2. Check VSS

Disconnect VSS harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VSS terminals. If resistance is about 250 ohms, VSS is okay. Check for open or short in wiring harness between VSS and speedometer. If resistance is not about 250 ohms, replace VSS.
