INTRODUCTION

A limited number of 1998 Sentra and 200SX vehicles may have engine mounts that emit a squeak or rattle noise. To ensure customer satisfaction and prevent any future inconvenience, Nissan has initiated a Voluntary Service Campaign to replace the right front engine mount to correct this noise.

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Nissan has assigned identification number PU803 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

NUMBER OF VEHICLES POTENTIALLY AFFECTED

The number of vehicles potentially affected is 546.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

It is a dealer responsibility to check (with SERVICE-COMM) each vehicle falling within the range of this service campaign which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from your dealership, other Nissan dealerships, private parties, or vehicles presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in dealer inventory.

A campaign status report (sent under separate cover) will assist you in the identification of those vehicles involved in this service campaign. Each dealership service department is encouraged to contact these vehicle owners to have the required inspections and repairs completed on their vehicle.

CUSTOMER FOCUS

Maintaining a strong customer relationship throughout the B14 Engine Mount Campaign is one of the key goals of NMC. Each and every action taken by Nissan and the servicing dealer will have a significant impact in retaining current Sentra and 200SX owners as future customers.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, turn OFF the ignition and set the parking brake.

2. Place chocks at the front and back of the rear wheels.

3. Use an appropriate cover to protect the right fender during the service procedure.

4. Place a floor jack under the engine oil pan, with a block of wood between the jack and the oil pan, and raise the engine slightly to relieve the weight of the engine from the engine mount (see Figure 1).

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the vehicle's paint with the floor jack.

5. Pull up on the engine coolant reservoir tank to remove it from its mounting bracket. Move the tank out of the way by placing it on the left side of the radiator hose (see Figure 2).

CAUTION:
If the engine is hot, do not place the reservoir tank on or near the engine exhaust manifold.

6. Remove the engine coolant reservoir tank mounting bracket from the vehicle (see Figure 3).

7. GA16DE ENGINE ONLY: Remove the front mount bracket from the cylinder head and engine mount (see Figure 4).

8. Remove the center bolt that runs through the engine mount (see Figure 5).

9. Remove the 3 bolts that secure the engine mount to the engine. Remove the old engine mount (see Figure 5).

10. Position the new engine mount and re-install (hand tight) the three bolts that secure the engine mount to the engine (see Figure 5).

NOTE:
When performing step 10 on a Sentra or 200SX equipped with the GA16DE (1.6 liter) engine, one of the three bolts that secure the engine mount is shorter in length. Make sure this shorter length bolt is reinstalled in its original location (see Figure 5).

11. Re-install the center bolt through the engine mount (see Figure 5). Adjust the floor jack as needed to allow easier installation of the center bolt.

12. Use an appropriate torque wrench to tighten all the engine mount securing bolts to:

44 - 54 N.m (4.5 - 5.5 kg-m, 33 - 40 ft-lb).

13. GA16DE ENGINE ONLY: Re-install the front mount bracket to the cylinder head and engine mount. Use an appropriate torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to: 44 - 54 N.m (4.5 - 5.5 kg-m, 33 - 40 ft-lb).

14. Re-install the engine coolant reservoir tank mounting bracket. Use an appropriate torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolt to: 3.7 - 5.0 N.m (0.38-0.51 kg-m, 33.0 - 44.3 in-lb).

15. Re-install the engine coolant reservoir tank into its mounting bracket.

16. Remove the floor jack from under the vehicle.

17. Check for smooth engine idle.
