Speedometer Inoperative (With Tachometer)

1. Check Power Supply Circuit
   
   Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster, leaving harness connectors connected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 22 (Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fuse No. 12 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
2. Check Speedometer Ground Circuit
   
   Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 28 (Black wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Fig 1 . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
3. Check VSS Output
   
   Remove VSS from transmission and leave harness connected. Using DVOM set to AC scale, measure voltage between terminals No. 24 (Red/Yellow wire) and No. 30 (Red wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector terminals while quickly turning VSS pinion gear by hand. See Fig 1 . About .5 volt should be generated. Replace speedometer if voltage is as specified. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
4. Check VSS
   
   Disconnect VSS harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VSS terminals. If resistance is about 250 ohms, VSS is okay. Check for open or short in wiring harness between VSS and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If resistance is not about 250 ohms, replace VSS.
