Temperature Gauge Circuit (With Tachometer)

  1. Check Power Supply Circuit

    Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster, leaving instrument cluster harness connectors connected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 41 (Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fuse No. 12 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.

  2. Check Temperature Gauge Ground Circuit

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 28 (Black wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
    CAUTION: In the following step, DO NOT ground temperature gauge terminal for more than 10 seconds.

  3. Check Gauge Operation

    Reconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Using a fused jumper wire, temporarily ground terminal No. 42 (Purple/White wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . Temperature gauge should move smoothly to "H" position. If temperature gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If temperature gauge does not operate as specified, replace temperature gauge.

  4. Check Temperature Gauge Sending Unit

    Check temperature gauge sending unit. See TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT  under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair or replace as necessary. If temperature gauge sending unit is okay, go to next step.

  5. Check Harness Continuity

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster and temperature gauge sending unit harness connectors. Using DVOM, check Purple/White wire for continuity between temperature gauge sending unit and appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is present, temperature gauge circuit is okay at this time. If continuity is not present, repair open in Purple/White wire.
