Fuel Gauge Circuit (With Tachometer)

  1. Check Power Supply Circuit

Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster, leaving instrument cluster harness connectors connected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 10 (Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fuse No. 12 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
  2. Check Fuel Gauge Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 28 (Black wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
CAUTION: In the following step, DO NOT ground fuel gauge terminal for more than 10 seconds.
  3. Check Gauge Operation

Reconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Using a fused jumper wire, temporarily ground terminal No. 14 (Green wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . Fuel gauge should move smoothly to "F" position. If fuel gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, replace fuel gauge.
  4. Check Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) at fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
  5. Check Fuel Gauge Sending Unit

Check fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT  under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair or replace as necessary. If fuel gauge sending unit is okay, go to next step.
  6. Check Harness Continuity

Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster and fuel gauge sending unit harness connectors. Using DVOM, check Green wire for continuity between fuel gauge sending unit and appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is present, fuel gauge circuit is okay at this time. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green wire.
