Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
WARNING: CLEAN BRAKES WITH A VACUUM DUST COLLECTOR TO MINIMIZE THE HAZARD OF AIRBORNE PARTICLES OR OTHER MATERIALS.Exploded View Of Rear Brake Assembly:
REMOVAL
1. Ensure parking brake lever is released completely and remove drum. If drum is hard to remove, the following procedures should be carried out.
a. Remove plug. Then shorten adjuster to make clearance between brake shoe and drum as shown.
Brake Drum Removal:
b. Install two bolts as shown, then tighten the two bolts gradually.
Rear Brake Parts Location:
2. Remove retainer, spring and rotate shoes.
^ Be careful not to damage wheel cylinder piston boot.
^ Be careful not to damage parking brake cable when separating it.
3. Remove adjuster.
4. Disconnect parking brake cable from toggle lever.
Toggle Lever Pin Removal:
5. Remove retainer ring with a suitable tool. Then separate toggle lever and brake shoe.
INSTALLATION
Toggle Lever And Shoe With Retainer Ring:
1. Fit toggle lever to brake shoe with retainer ring.
2. Apply brake grease to the contact areas shown.
3. Shorten adjuster by rotating it. Pay attention to direction of adjuster. Lefthand side adjuster has lefthand threads with a depression marking. Righthand adjuster has righthand threads without a depression.
Brake Adjuster Installation:
4. Apply brake grease to adjuster as shown.
Adjuster And Return Spring Components:
5. Install adjuster and adjuster lever; then install upper return spring and adjuster spring as shown.
6. Connect parking brake cable to toggle lever. Be careful not to damage brake cable and wheel cylinder piston boots.
7. Install shoes on wheel cylinder one at a time and secure shoes with shoe hold-down pins and retainer.
^ Do not allow the piston to spring away when assembling.
^ Be careful not to damage wheel cylinder piston boots.
8. Install lower return spring.
9. Check all parts are installed properly. Ensure the direction of adjuster assembly is correct.
10. Install brake drum.
11. When installing new wheel cylinder or overhauling wheel cylinder, bleed air from the hydraulic system. Service and Repair
12. Ensure proper parking brake lining/drum clearance. Adjustments
