1995-96 SENTRA/200SX INTERMITTENTLY WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF "PARK"

APPLIED VEHICLES:
1995-96 Sentra/200SX (814) with automatic transmission (A/T)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If the A/T shift lever on a 1995-96 Sentra or 200SX vehicle intermittently cannot be moved out of the "Park" position under hot ambient conditions, it may be due to one of the following:

1. Contamination (spilled juice or soda) or damage to the A/T shifter mechanism.

2. The key interlock cable is binding.

This incident may occur more frequently when the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight.

A countermeasure interlock cable is available to reduce the binding incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Duplicate the incident to make sure the shift lever will not move out of the "Park" position.

2. Disconnect the key interlock cable from the shifter mechanism (see Figure 1) and check the shift lever movement.

A. If the lever will not move out of the 'Park' position, the incident is probably caused by the shifter mechanism. Check for: (1) proper shifter solenoid operation; (2) bent or broken parts; (3) evidence of spilled liquids such as juice or soda.

Clean and repair components as necessary and re-check the operation.

B. If the lever will now move freely out of the "Park" position, then reconnect the cable to the shifter mechanism and disconnect the cable at the ignition key end. If the lever now will not move out of the "Park" position, the cable may be damaged or have excessive internal friction. Replace the cable. Skip to step 3 below.

3. Replace the A/T key interlock cable with P/N 34908-1M200. Refer to pages AT-146 through AT-174 in the 1996 Sentra/200SX Service Manual for proper cable removal, installation and adjustment procedures.

CAUTION:
Do not twist the adjuster holder while performing the cable adjustment. Twisting of the adjuster holder can increase internal friction of the cable. This can increase the risk of an A/T shift lever stuck in "Park" incident.

4. Re-check the cable operation under the same ambient temperature conditions in which the original incident occurred. Make sure the incident is resolved.

5. After cable replacement, make sure the shift lever can not be moved after the key is removed from the ignition. If the shift lever can be moved with the key removed, lengthen the cable adjustment and re-check.
