HORN ACTIVATES RANDOMLY
APPLIED VEHICLES:
1995 Sentra (B14)
1995 200SX (B14)
APPLIED DATE:
Vehicles built from November 1, 1994 to May 1, 1995
SERVICE INFORMATION
The horn on some 1995 Sentra or 200SX vehicles may activate randomly if: 1) The horn pad (SRS module) is pushed slightly towards the right hand side, 2) driving on rough roads, or 3) the vehicle is left in bright sunlight and thermal expansion of adjacent metal components occurs.
The cause for this incident may be a short to ground due to one of the two following situations:
1. The mounting bolts for the automatic speed control device (ASCD) switch on the steering wheel contact the SRS module/pad (M/P) tab.
2. There is contact between the SRS M/P tab and the ASCD switch bracket.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
To determine which condition is the cause of the incident, first remove the ASCD switch from the steering wheel and try to duplicate the horn activation. If you cannot duplicate the incident this may mean the cause is the ASCD switch mounting bolts. In this case, do procedure 1.
NOTE:
If Repair Procedure 1 does not eliminate the ground condition, do Repair Procedure 2.
Repair Procedure 1
1. Loosen, but do remove, the SRS module mounting bolts (special bolts in the service manual, page RS-13).
2. Pull the module away from the steering wheel. Then retighten the mounting bolts.
This will provide clearance between the ASCD switch mounting bolt and the SRS M/P tab.
Repair Procedure 2
1. Remove the SRS module.
2. Remove 1.5 mm from the right hand M/P tab.
3. Reinstall the SRS module.
