Starting System: Description and Operation

Nissan starters are of two types, direct drive and gear reduction. The direct drive starter Fig. 1 is equipped with an overrunning clutch type starter drive. A solenoid switch is mounted on the starter motor.

Gear reduction starters Figs. 2 and 3 may use a planetary gear train or a idler gear train to transmit armature rotation to the pinion shaft. A solenoid switch is mounted on the starter motor.
