NUMBER OF VEHICLES POTENTIALLY AFFECTED
Approximately 15,000
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the dealer's responsibility to check each vehicle falling within the range of this campaign which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in dealer inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While the Federal law applies only to new cars, Nissan strongly encourages dealers to correct any used cars in their inventory prior to sale.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owners will be notified by mail beginning June 9, 1997. The letter will request that they contact a Nissan dealer for an appointment before they bring the vehicle in for repair to allow the dealer to order the correct color seat belt buckle kit.
PARTS ORDERING
Due to the low volume of vehicles involved, particularly those with blue seat belts (see table), dealers are requested not to place buckle kit orders until owners make an appointment and indicate which color seat belt buckle they have. Use the Customer Care ordering procedure when you order buckle kits. This procedure will eliminate the need for a customer to leave their vehicle overnight.
Models with Blue Seat Belts
(all other exterior colors and all charcoal cloth interiors have black seat belts)
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Pull the rear seat cushion upward and disengage it from the attaching hooks. Remove the cushion.
2. Remove both left and right side buckles.
3. Use the new bolts and washers provided with the kit to install new buckles. Torque the bolts to 32-41 ft-lbs (43-55 N.m, 4.4-5.6 kg-m).
4. Engage the tongue and tug on the belt to confirm proper latching operation. Repeat for the other buckle.
5. Confirm the seat belt retractor extends and retracts properly. Tug on the belt briskly to ensure belt lock-up.
NOTE:
If a seat belt retractor operates improperly, replace it under the vehicle lifetime seat belt warranty. Do not replace it under this campaign.
6. Re-install the seat cushion. Secure the cushion with the mounting hooks.
PARTS INFORMATION
After the customer makes an appointment and indicates which color seat belt buckles their vehicle has, use the Customer Care ordering procedure to order each buckle kit.
