D21/WD21 REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
APPLIED MODEL:
1991-92 Truck (D21)/ Pathfinder (WD21), with the VG30 Engine.
APPLIED VIN:
Start of 1993 D21/WD21 Production.
SERVICE INFORMATION:
On some 1991 and 1992 Truck/Pathfinder vehicles, equipped with the VG30 Engine (2 or 4 Wheel Drive), drivers may describe a loud whine heard from the rear differential at speeds from 25 to 45 mph. Applied vehicles are equipped with the H233B Model Final Drive Assembly (2 and 4 pinion type). Some drivers describe these whine noises as occurring only on acceleration or deceleration, while others describe them as occurring at constant speeds. This noise is typically first identified at very low vehicle mileage (less than 2,000 miles).
The source of such noise may be the rear differential gear set. The countermeasure gear set is at a reduced contact angle.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Test drive vehicle and verify differential whine.
2. Remove and replace final drive assembly with countermeasure parts.
