(Radiator and A/C Condenser Fans)
APPLIED MODEL: 1991 Sentra/NX (B13)
SERVICE INFORMATION
A non-A/C 1991 Sentra/NX has one cooling fan: a radiator fan located on the driver's side behind the radiator. An A/C equipped 1991 Sentra/NX has two cooling fans: a radiator fan and a condenser fan. There are several different radiator and condenser fans (due to wattage differences) depending on body style, engine type, and transmission type.
CORRECT FAN LOCATION:
The radiator fans and condenser fans look similar, but they are different and it is important that they are installed in the correct locations. When an A/C system is installed, the radiator fan is removed, the condenser fan is installed on the passenger side, and the radiator fan is reinstalled on the driver's side. It is important to install each fan in the correct position for it to function properly. The illustration below shows the correct position for a typical radiator fan and a typical condenser fan (as viewed from passenger compartment).
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RADIATOR FANS AND CONDENSER FANS:
All radiator fan assemblies have four fan blades and hose clips on the bottom. All condenser fan assemblies have five fan blades, and a relief on the top corner for the radiator hose. See the illustration below. There are differences in harness length and connector location, and presence or lack of a heat shield in the different wattage fans.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION
The fan shroud torque specification listed in the A/C installation manual (June/July 1990) is incorrect. The correct torque specification is given below. Use this specification when installing or servicing radiator or condenser fans.
CONDENSER FAN APPLICATION:
There are four possible radiator fans and four possible condenser fans, depending upon body style, engine, and transmission types. The correct radiator fan is installed at the factory, but it is up to the A/C installer to install the correct condenser fan. The following matrixes and illustrations clarify which condenser fans to use for the U.S. and Canada.
NOTE: Failure to install the condenser fan will result in poor A/C performance and possible engine over-heating.
