Engine Disassembly

Fig. 16a Engine outer components (Part 1 of 2):

1. Remove engine outer components, Fig. 16.
2. Place engine on suitable workstand.
3. Remove timing belt as previously described.
4. Drain coolant and engine oil.
5. Remove water pump.
6. Remove oil pan, as previously described, and the oil pump.
7. Remove cylinder heads as previously described.
8. Remove pistons.

9. Remove bearing caps and crankshaft, loosening attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 17.

PISTON & ROD ASSEMBLY

1. Using suitable tool, remove piston rings.
2. Using suitable tool, drive out pin.

CYLINDER HEAD

1. Remove exhaust manifolds, loosening attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 18.
2. Remove rocker shafts with rocker arms, loosening attaching bolts in two or three stages.
3. Remove hydraulic valve lifters and lifter guide, noting the following:
a. Hold hydraulic valve lifters with wire so that they do not drop from lifter guide.
b. Do not place hydraulic lifters upside down.
c. Do not disassemble hydraulic valve lifter.
d. Attach identifying tags to valve lifters.
4. Remove camshaft end plate.
5. Remove camshaft from front side.
6. Using suitable tool, remove valve component parts.
