Crankshaft Service: Installation

  1. Install main bearing halves into engine block. Ensure bearings are on correct journal and that all oil feed holes are clear. Journal No. 4 requires thrust bearing. Upper bearing halves have oil grooves and are not interchangeable with lower bearing halves. Apply oil to main bearing surface. Install crankshaft.
  2. Tighten main bearing cap in 2 or 3 stages, using reverse of removal sequence. See Figure. Ensure crankshaft rotates smoothly.
  3. Install rear end plate and flywheel. Install piston and rod assemblies. Apply sealer to oil pan gasket. Install oil pan and tighten bolts in proper sequence. See Figure. Install remaining components in reverse order of removal procedure.
