NOISE IN AUTO-LOCK FREE RUNNING HUBS (This Bulletin supersedes the original Bulletin to Include now parts Information. Please discard the original Bulletin.)

APPLIED MODELS: 1986.5-1987 4WD Truck and 1987 Pathfinder with auto-locking free-running front hubs

SERVICE INFORMATION

When trouble-shooting to locate the source of unusual noise in auto-lock free running front hubs on 1986.5-1987 4WD Truck and 1987 Pathfinder models, carefully inspect at the following points:

1. Inspect the hubs on both sides of the vehicle. Check for wear or damage to either "Brake All or "Brake B" as shown below. Damage to these brakes on one side of the vehicle may cause noise in the opposite hub. If Brake "A" or Brake "B" on either side are damaged, replace the damaged front hub assembly. NOTE: When the hub assembly is replaced, Brake "B" must be replaced. It is included with the hub assembly.

2. Check the axial end play of the front axles as shown below. Adjust the end play if it is not within the specified limit.
a. Set the dial gauge on the drive shaft end.

b. Measure the axial end play of the drive shaft.
Axial end play: 0.1 - 0.3mm (0.004 - 0.002 in)

c. If axial end play is not within specified limits, select another snap ring, and re-check the limits.
SNAP RING LIMITS:
1.1mm (0.043in) 1.3mm (0.051in)
1.5mm (0.059in) 1.7mm (0.067in)
1.9mm (0.075in) 2.1mm (0.083)
2.3mm (0.094in)

3. If the axial end play of either front axle is out of specification, then make sure the bearing races for the tapered roller wheel bearings are fully seated in the hub. If they are not, seat them carefully. Otherwise, they will seat themselves and make a further change in the axial end play of the front axle, which may cause damage to the hub brakes.
4. Road test the vehicle to make sure the noise is eliminated from the hubs.
