BLOWN FUSE TROUBLESHOOTING, 1986.5 D21 TRUCK
APPLIED MODEL: 1986.5 2WD and 4WD Truck (D21) with manual transmission
SERVICE INFORMATION
In the power supply routing wiring diagram below, many of the fuses have more than one circuit. For example, the Meter and Gauges, Warning Lamps, Turn Signals, Back-up Lamp, Seat Belt Timer and Inhibitor Switch circuits use the same fuse. If there is a short in any one of these circuits, the fuse will blow and all circuits will be inoperative. Therefore, if one circuit is found to be inoperative and the fuse is blown, all circuits on that fuse should be checked to find the cause before installing a new fuse.
An incident example is shown below.
Incident: Meter and Gauges inoperative.
Diagnosis: Fuse for meter and gauges is blown.
^ Check all circuits using that fuse (Meter and Gauges, Warning Lamps, Turn Signals, Back-up Lamp, Seat Belt Timer and Inhibitor Switch) until cause is found.
Result: Cause traced to a shorted wire at reverse lamp switch at transmission.
Repair wire as follows:
A. Loosen the tie-wrap around the reverse lamp switch.
B. Repair the wire(s) and rotate the harness to the front side of the switch.
C. Relocate the tie-wrap to the position shown below and tighten securely.
D. Replace the fuse and check all circuits on that fuse for proper operation.
