Ignition Coil Testing

Note: This vehicle could have two different types of ignition coils. Be sure to identify which type you are working on before testing.

Early type is a conventional style coil.

Ignition Coil Primary Circuit:

1. Be sure ignition is "OFF".
2. Remove coil wire from coil.

Primary Circuit
3. Connect ohmmeter as shown. Reading should be approximately:

1.0 - 1.2 ohms

Ignition Coil Secondary Circuit:

Secondary Circuit
4. Connect ohmmeter as shown. Reading should be approximately:

7,300 - 11,000 ohms

Late type is a molded coil.

Ignition Coil Circuit Testing.:

1. Be sure ignition is "OFF".
2. Remove coil wire from coil.

Primary Circuit

3. Connect ohmmeter as shown. Reading should be approximately:

.8 - 1.0 ohms

Secondary Circuit

4. Connect ohmmeter as shown. Reading should be approximately:

8,000 - 12,000 ohms
