Valve Guide Servicing: Replacement

  1. If clearance is beyond limits and valve stem is not worn, the valve guide must be replaced. To replace guide, heat cylinder head to 300-400°F (150-200°C).
  2. Using long drift, drive old guide out from combustion chamber side. With head at room temperature, ream cylinder head guide hole to fit new guide. Standard valve guide outside diameter is .4340-.4344" (11.023-11.034 mm).
  3. Interference fit of guide in cylinder head guide hole is .0011-.0023" (.027-.059 mm). Reheat cylinder head and install new guide.
  4. Ensure guide projects above cylinder head surface .402-.409" (10.20-10.40 mm). Use reamer to finish guide bore to .2756-.2764" (7.000-7.020 mm). Check and reface valve seat surface as necessary.
