Clearance Check

  1. Measure clearance between valve stem and valve guide with micrometer and telescopic hole gauge. Check diameter of valve stem at top, center, and bottom.
  2. Insert hole gauge in valve guide bore and measure at center. Subtract highest reading of valve stem diameter from valve guide bore to determine clearance.
  3. Standard guide-to-stem clearance is .0008-.0021" (.020-.053 mm) for intake and .0016-.0029" (.040-.073 mm) for exhaust.
  4. Maximum guide-to-stem clearance is .004" (.10 mm) for all models. Insert valve into guide and move left and right, parallel with rocker arm. If tip moves .008" (.20 mm) or more, clearance is beyond maximum limit.
