Valve Clearance

  1. With air cleaner and valve cover removed, rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. Loosen valve rocker adjusting screw lock nut.
    NOTE: Valve clearance adjustment is made with engine warm but not running. For assembly purposes, with engine cold, adjust intake valves to .008" (.21 mm) and exhaust valves to .009" (.23 mm).
  2. Turn adjusting screw until specified clearance of .012" (.30 mm) is obtained. Adjust valves as follows: No. 1 Intake and Exhaust, No. 2 Intake and No. 3 Exhaust.
  3. Rotate crankshaft until No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. Adjust remaining valves, No. 2 Exhaust, No. 3 Intake and No. 4 Intake and Exhaust. After adjustment, hold adjusting screw and tighten rocker arm lock nut. Recheck clearances.
