Cylinder Head: Removal
- Turn crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Remove alternator and bracket. If equipped, remove power steering pump and A/C compressor. DO NOT discharge systems. Secure components away from engine.
- Remove exhaust and intake manifolds as previously described. Remove valve cover and gasket. Remove oil and water pumps. Note bolt lengths and locations for reassembly reference.
- Remove thermostat housing and distributor if necessary. Remove crankshaft pulley and damper. Remove upper and lower outer front dust cover mount bolts. Remove covers and gaskets.
- Disconnect all hoses, cables, and wires interfering with cylinder head removal. Remove fuel pump mount bolts, spacer, and pump. Mark timing belt rotation direction. Loosen timing belt tensioner and remove timing belt.CAUTION: After timing belt is removed, DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft.NOTE: There are 3 different lengths of cylinder head bolts. Note locations during removal for reassembly reference.
- Loosen head bolts gradually, in reverse order of tightening sequence. Remove cylinder head. See Figure .
