Cylinder Head: Installation
- Thoroughly clean head and block mating surfaces. Ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Install new cylinder head gasket on dowel pins. Install cylinder head.
- Install cylinder head bolts. Temporarily tighten 2 center bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Tighten head bolts to final specifications after installing timing belt and front cover.
- To install distributor, align mark on distributor gear to mark on shaft. Then turn rotor shaft counterclockwise, on distributor cap side, about 15° and install.
- After checking for proper bolt locations, install water and oil pumps. Install drive belt tensioner. DO NOT tighten tensioner bolts to final specifications before drive belt is installed.
- Install timing belt plate and crankshaft sprocket with mating marks facing forward. Set timing belt on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Align belt mating mark to mating mark on each sprocket. See Fig 1
.
NOTE: Align timing marks on belt with timing marks on sprockets.
- Tighten belt tensioner and assemble spring. To set spring, hook one end on bolt "B" side. Hook the other end on tensioner bracket pawl. Tighten bolt "B" and then bolt "A". Belt tension will automatically be at the specified value. See Fig 4
.WARNING: in Fig 3 make sure the proper alignment mark is being used.NOTE: Tighten bolt "B" and then bolt "A" to set belt tension.
- Install new crankshaft front oil seal in oil pump. Install upper and lower front covers with new gaskets. Tighten mount bolts. Install crankshaft plate, pulley damper, and pulley.
- Tighten cylinder head bolts evenly, in sequence, in 3 steps. See Fig 5 . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. After engine has run for several minutes, let it cool down and recheck head bolt torque.
NOTE:
Tighten head bolts evenly, in sequence, in 3 steps.
