Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Inspection
- Check camshaft, journals, and cam lobe surface for bend, wear, or damage. Check bend with camshaft in "V" blocks. Set dial indicator on center journal. Using total indicator reading, maximum bend limit is .004" (.10 mm).
- Check camshaft lobe height. Standard lobe height for 2.0L is 1.5289-1.5309" (38.843-38.884 mm) for intake and exhaust. Standard lobe height for 1.8L is 1.5055-1.5075" (38.240-38.290 mm) for intake and 1.5289-1.5309" (38.843-38.884 mm) for exhaust. Maximum wear limit of cam lobe is .008" (.20 mm). On all engines, replace camshaft if beyond limits.
- Check camshaft end play with dial indicator. Maximum end play is .008" (.20 mm) for all engines. If beyond limit, replace camshaft and/or cylinder head.
- Check camshaft journal and cylinder head bearing diameters. Standard journal-to-bearing clearance is .002" (.05 mm). If camshaft journal or cylinder head bearing surface is worn to the point that bearing clearance is more than maximum limit, replace camshaft and/or cylinder head.
- With camshaft sprocket installed, check tooth surface for flaws or excessive wear. Install dial indicator, with pointer mounted to flat surface of sprocket. Check for runout. Standard sprocket runout limit is .004" (.10 mm) or less. Replace sprocket if worn or beyond specification.
