Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. STEP 1. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) CAN bus diagnostics 

    Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to diagnose the CAN bus lines.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 3.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS TABLE ). On completion, go to Step 2.
  2. STEP 2. DTC recheck after resetting CAN bus lines 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1521 or C1522 stored? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 3.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
  3. STEP 3. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, and open circuit in S1+, S3-, S2+, S4-, R1+, R2- line between EPS-ECU connector and resolver 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 4.
    2. NO:  Go to  Step 6.
  4. STEP 4. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) data list 

    Check the following data list DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  .

    • Item No. 04: Motor current
    • Item No. 05: Motor current (target)
    • Item No. 17: Motor electric angle
    • Item No. 18: Motor speed

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 5.
    2. NO:  Go to  Step 7.
  5. STEP 5. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1521 or C1522 stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the EPS-ECU (Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  ). Then go to Step 6.
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS ).
  6. STEP 6. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1521 or C1522 stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the steering column shaft assembly (Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  ). Then go to Step 7.
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS ).
  7. STEP 7. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1521 or C1522 stored? 

    1. YES:  Return to  Step 1.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
