Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. STEP 1. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) CAN bus diagnostics 

    Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to diagnose the CAN bus lines.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 3.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS TABLE ). On completion, go to Step 2.
  2. STEP 2. DTC recheck after resetting CAN bus lines 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1514 stored? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 3.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
  3. STEP 3. Voltage measurement at EPS-ECU connector (TSV, TSE terminal) 
    1. The steering is in the neutral position.
    2. Measure the EPS-ECU voltage without disconnecting the connector (by backprobing).
    3. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    4. Measure the voltage between the EPS-ECU connector (TSV terminal) and the EPS-ECU connector (TSE terminal).

      OK: 5 ± 0.2 V 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 5.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 4.
  4. STEP 4. Check of short to ground, and open circuit in TSV and TSE line between EPS-ECU connector and torque sensor 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 5.
    2. NO:  Go to  Step 7.
  5. STEP 5. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) data list 
    1. The steering is in the neutral position.
    2. Check the following data list DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  .
      • Item No. 03: Torque sensor (power supply)

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 7.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 6.
  6. STEP 6. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1514 stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the EPS-ECU (Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  ). Then go to Step 7.
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS ).
  7. STEP 7. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1514 stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the steering column shaft assembly (Refer to STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY  ). Then go to Step 8.
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS ).
  8. STEP 8. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. Erase the DTC.
    2. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.
    3. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC C1514 stored? 

    1. YES:  Return to  Step 1.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
