Diagnosis & Repair

NOTE: For component location and connector identification, see Figure .
  1. With ignition off, depress brake pedal repeatedly more than 40 times until pedal depressing force feels heavy. Disconnect HBB connector B-17. Measure resistance between terminals No. 1 and 5 (component side). Resistance should be about 1000 ohms. If resistance is about 1000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 1000 ohms, replace master cylinder and hydraulic unit assembly, then go to step  5 .
  2. Visually inspect HBB for brake fluid leakage. If brake fluid leakage is found, go to next step. If brake fluid leakage is not found, go to step  4 .
  3. Remove HBB. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disassemble HBB. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  under OVERHAUL. Inspect the following:
    • Power piston assembly for rust, damage, wear or deterioration.
    • Master cylinder piston assembly for rust, damage, wear or deterioration.
    • Inside of hydraulic unit assembly cylinder for rust or damage.

If problem is found, replace defective parts as necessary. Reassemble and install HBB. Bleed system. See BLEEDING HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  . Go to step  5 . If problem is not found, go to next step.

  4. Clear DTC memory. Recheck for DTC. If DTC 57 is set, replace accumulator, then go to next step. If DTC 57 is not set, it can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent.
  5. Clear DTC memory. Recheck for DTC. If DTC 57 is set, go to step  1 . If DTC 57 is not set, repair is complete.
