Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. Is DTC 27 or 28 displayed? If so, see DTC 27 (P0705): PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT - OPEN  or DTC 28 (P0705): PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT - SHORT  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If not, go to next step.
  2. Check the shift cable assembly. Move the gearshift lever to each position, and check if the manual control lever position of the PNP switch corresponds to the gearshift lever position. Is the manual control lever position correct? If so, go to next step. If not, adjust or repair the shift cable. See appropriate SERVICING article.
  3. Check the engine system. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Is the inspection result good? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace engine components as necessary.
  4. Check the torque converter. Remove the transaxle. Check the torque converter for installation condition (whether installed in a slanted direction or not), torque converter spline or teeth for damage. Is the torque converter in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, replace torque converter.
  5. Replace the oil pump (oil pump cannot be repaired). See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Is the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, go to next step.
  6. Possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Is the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, go to step  1 .
