Stall Speed Test: Notes

WARNING: Do not let anyone stand in front of or behind the vehicle while this test is being carried out.
CAUTION: During stall speed test, do not open throttle fully for more than 5 seconds or transmission damage may occur. If performing more than one torque converter stall speed test, operate engine at 1000 RPM in Neutral for at least one minute to cool transmission fluid before performing next stall speed test.

This test measures the maximum engine speed when the gearshift lever is at the "D" or "R" position and the torque converter stalls. This tests the operation of the torque converter (stator and one-way clutch operation) and the holding performance of the clutches and brakes in the transmission.

  1. Ensure transmission fluid and engine coolant levels are correct. Apply parking brake and chock both rear wheels. Connect a tachometer to engine. Start and run engine until transmission fluid temperature reaches 158-176°F (70-80°C) and engine coolant temperature reaches 176-212°F (80-100°C).
  2. Place gearshift lever in "D" position, open throttle fully, and note maximum engine RPM on tachometer. This is the torque converter stall speed. On 3.0L models, stall speed should be 2000-2600 RPM. On 3.5L models, stall speed should be 2300-2900 RPM.
  3. Repeat procedure with gearshift lever in "R" position. On 3.0L models, stall speed should be 2000-2600 RPM. On 3.5L models, stall speed should be 2300-2900 RPM. Stop engine and place gearshift lever in "P" position. If stall speed is as specified, testing is complete. If stall speed is not as specified, use the following symptoms for trouble shooting results of the stall speed test.
