Diagnostic Procedure (Montero)

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
  1. Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace the PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
  2. Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the PNP switch harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
  3. Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  4. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 101 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "P", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  9 . If not, turn ignition off and go to next step (with sport mode), or repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 101 (without sport mode).
  5. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  6. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 101. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  7. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  8. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 1. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, repair short to ground in wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and the transfer-ECU harness connector E-104 terminal No. 32. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in TRANSFER CASES. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  9. Place gearshift lever in "R" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 108 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "R", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  14 . If not, turn ignition off and go to next step (with sport mode), or repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 108 (without sport mode).
  10. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  11. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 108. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  12. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  13. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 2. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, repair harness connector and/or wire harness damage in "R" output signal circuit of PNP switch. If not, repair as necessary.
  14. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 121 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "N", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  19 . If not, turn ignition off and go to next step (with sport mode), or repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 121 (without sport mode).
  15. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  16. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 121. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  17. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  18. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 3. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, repair short to ground in wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and the transfer-ECU harness connector E-104 terminal No. 32. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in TRANSFER CASES. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  19. Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 102 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "D", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  37 (with sport mode), or go to step  25 (without sport mode). If not, go to next step (with sport mode), or repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 102 (without sport mode).
  20. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  21. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 102. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step (with sport mode), or go to step  24 (without sport mode). If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  22. Check all harness connectors between shift switch assembly and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
  23. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 1. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 5 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 4. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  24. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 4. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
  25. Place gearshift lever in "3" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 109 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "3", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  29 . If not, turn ignition off and repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 109.
  26. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  27. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 109. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  28. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 7. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
  29. Place gearshift lever in "2" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 122 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "2", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to next step. If not, turn ignition off and repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 122.
  30. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  31. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 122. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  32. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 8. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
  33. Place gearshift lever in "L" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 110 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "L", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to next step. If not, turn ignition off and repair damage to wire harness between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 110.
  34. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  35. Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 110. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  36. Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 9. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
  37. Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to each position (include sport mode positions if equipped) and confirm the scan tool display. (The sport mode is indicated as "D" on the scan tool.) Turn ignition off. Is the switch operating properly? If so, malfunction may be intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
