Diagnostic Procedure (Montero Sport)
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "P", "R", "N", "D", "3", "2" and "L" positions to confirm gearshift lever position matches scan tool display. Turn ignition off. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, select from the following:
- When scan tool display disagrees at all positions, go to next step.
- When scan tool display disagrees at "P" position, go to step 6 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "R" position, go to step 14 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "N" position, go to step 21 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "D" position, go to step 28 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "3" position, go to step 35 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "2" position, go to step 42 .
- When scan tool display disagrees at "L" position, go to step 49 .
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 7 and junction block connector D-13 terminal No. 11. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "P", "R", "N", "D", "3", "2" and "L" positions to confirm gearshift lever position matches scan tool display. Turn ignition off. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "P" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 101 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 101. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 41. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the PCM harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "R" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 108 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 108. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 42. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PCM switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "N" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 121 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 121. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 43. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "D" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 102 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If not, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 102. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch connector terminal No. 3 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 44. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "3" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 109 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 109. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 45. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "2" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 122 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 122. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 46. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to "L" position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 110 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 110. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check combination meter harness connectors and related circuit harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and combination meter connector C-3 terminal No. 47. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 5 . If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
