Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Check the vehicle acceleration. Does the vehicle accelerate poorly (transmission stays in 3rd gear) when starting from a stop with the gearshift lever in "D" position? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  2. Check the backup power supply voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Measure voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 66 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  4 . If not, go to next step.
  3. Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open in wire harness between PCM harness connector terminal No. 66 and battery. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s). Check for the symptom.
  4. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. Is DTC 54 present? If so, see DTC 54 (P1751): A/T CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT OPEN/SHORTED TO GROUND  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If not, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Move the gearshift lever to "P", "R", "N", "D", "3", "2" and "L" positions to confirm scan tool display matches gearshift lever position. Turn ignition off. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, check for the symptom. If the symptom is not eliminated, check for possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If not, diagnosis PNP switch system. See DTC 27 (P0705): PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT - OPEN  and DTC 28 (P0705): PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT - SHORT  .
