Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Using scan tool, monitor output shaft speed sensor. Drive vehicle at constant speed of 31 MPH in 3rd gear (4-speed) or 4th gear (5-speed). Scan tool display should indicate 1300-1600 RPM. Turn ignition off. Is the output shaft speed sensor operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, see DTC 23 (P0720): OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT - OPEN/SHORTED  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  2. Using scan tool, monitor TP sensor. With the throttle in idle position, voltage should be 535-735 millivolts. With the throttle in fully opened position, voltage should be 4500-5500 millivolts. Turn ignition off. Is the TP sensor operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, check the TP sensor. Check the symptom.
  3. Using scan tool, monitor the duty percentage of the following solenoid valves: low-reverse solenoid valve, underdrive solenoid valve, second solenoid valve, overdrive solenoid valve and reduction solenoid valve (5-speed). Check that the values displayed on scan tool match scan tool data list. See SCAN TOOL DATA  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition off. Are the solenoid valves operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  6 .
  4. Adjust line pressure. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE ADJUSTMENTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. Check the symptom. Is the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, go to next step.
  5. Disassemble and clean the valve body. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Check the "O" ring installation, bolts for looseness and the valve body for damage. Repair or replace faulty parts. Is the repair possible and the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, replace the valve body assembly. Check the symptom. If symptom still exists, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace the faulty solenoid valve. See appropriate SERVICING article. Is the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, go to next step.
  7. Possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Is the symptom eliminated? If so, diagnosis is complete. If not, go to step  1 .
