Diagnostic Procedure (Montero)
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Using scan tool, check the "N" range indicator light bulb. Turn ignition on. The "N" range indicator light in the combination meter should illuminate. Turn ignition off. Does the "N" range indicator light illuminate? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, go to next step.
- Check the "N" range indicator light bulb. Remove the combination meter. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Check the "N" range indicator light bulb. Is the bulb in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, replace bulb.
- Check combination meter harness connectors D-03 and D-05 for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check the continuity at combination meter harness connector D-03. Disconnect combination meter harness connector D-03 and measure at the harness side. Measure resistance between combination meter harness connector D-03 terminal No. 57 and ground. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. Is the resistance as specified? If so, go to step 6 . If not, go to next step.
- Check combination meter harness connector D-03 for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, repair open or damage in wire harness between combination meter harness connector D-03 terminal No. 57 and ground. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check all "N" range circuit harness connectors between PCM and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open, short to ground or damage between combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 121. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check wire harness for damage between combination meter harness connector D-03 terminal No. 57 and ground. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check wire harness for short to ground between combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 3 and PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check wire harness for short to ground between the PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and the transfer-ECU harness connector E-104 terminal No. 32 (Yellow/Green wire). Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Using scan tool, check the "N" range indicator light bulb. Turn ignition on. The "N" range indicator light in the combination meter should illuminate. Turn ignition off. Does the "N" range indicator light illuminate? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
