Diagnostic Procedure
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Using scan tool, monitor TCC slippage. Start engine and operate vehicle in 3rd gear (4-speed) or 4th gear (5-speed) at constant speed of 31 MPH. Scan tool display should indicate -10 to 10 RPM. Release accelerator pedal. The scan tool display should indicate -300 to -100 RPM or 100 to 300 RPM when the accelerator pedal is released at 31 MPH and less. Turn ignition off. Is the TCC slippage as specified? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command TCC solenoid on and off. A clicking sound should be heard from TCC solenoid valve when operated. Turn ignition off. Is the TCC solenoid valve operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace the TCC solenoid valve. See appropriate SERVICING article.

- Replace the valve body. See appropriate SERVICING article. Test drive the vehicle. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. Is DTC 53 present? If so, go to next step. If not, inspection is complete.
- Possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test drive the vehicle. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. Is DTC 53 present? If so, replace the torque converter. If not, inspection is complete.
