Diagnostic Procedure
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Using scan tool, check DTCs. Is the DTC 54 present? If so, see DTC 54 (P1751): A/T CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT OPEN/SHORTED TO GROUND . If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command low-reverse solenoid valve on and off. A clicking sound should be heard from solenoid valve when the low-reverse solenoid valve is operated. Turn ignition off. Is the solenoid valve operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, go to next step.
- Check the low-reverse solenoid valve output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 129 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 9 .
- Check transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector and PCM harness connector for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 129. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all harness connectors between A/T control relay and transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminal No. 10 and A/T control relay harness connector terminal No. 3. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Using scan tool, command low-reverse solenoid valve on and off. A clicking sound should be heard from solenoid valve when operated. Turn ignition off. Is the solenoid valve operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the low-reverse solenoid valve at transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector. Disconnect transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector and measure at the solenoid valve side. Measure the resistance between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminals No. 6 and 10. Resistance should be 2.7-3.4 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Is the resistance as specified? If so, go to next step. If not, replace the low-reverse solenoid valve. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check the power supply voltage at transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector. Disconnect transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminal No. 10 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 13 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all harness connectors between A/T control relay and transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open or short to ground in wire harness between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminal No. 10 and A/T control relay harness connector terminal No. 3. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check all harness connectors between PCM and transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between transmission solenoid valve assembly harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 129. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
