Diagnostic Procedure (Montero Sport)
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace the PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 101 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "P", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 8 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 101. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 41. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "R" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 108 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "R", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 12 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 108. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 42. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 121 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "N", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 16 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 121. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 43. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 102 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "D", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 20 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 102. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and combination meter harness connector C-03 terminal No. 44. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "3" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 109 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "3", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 24 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 109. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 45. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "2" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 122 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "2", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 28 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 122. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 46. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Place gearshift lever in "L" position. Check the PNP switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 110 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Move gearshift lever to each gearshift lever position. When gearshift lever is in any position except "L", voltage should be 0.5 volt or less. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 32 . If not, go to next step.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for damage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 110. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all PNP switch circuit harness connectors between PNP switch and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 6 and combination meter harness connector C-3 terminal No. 47. If not, repair or replace the defective harness connector(s).
- Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Turn ignition on. Move the gearshift lever to each position and confirm the scan tool display. Turn ignition off. Is the switch operating properly? If so, malfunction may be intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
