Bleeding Hydraulic Brake Booster
CAUTION:
During bleeding operations, depress brake pedal slowly. If brake pedal is pressed rapidly, hydraulic pump motor will operate and discharge brake fluid at a high pressure and volume.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK. Connect clear hose to right front caliper bleeder connection. Pump pedal 3 to 4 times, then hold in depressed position. Open bleeder valve on caliper, then pump brake pedal until clean, air free stream of brake fluid is discharged. Repeat process for left front caliper.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Listen to HBB pump motor, if pump motor sounds dry and high-pitched, depress brake pedal 3 to 4 times to introduce hydraulic fluid into motor. If HBB pump motor sounds normal, go to next step.
- Wait for pump motor to stop operating, then slowly depress brake pedal 3 to 4 times. Observe condition of fluid in reservoir. If fluid in reservoir is cloudy, wait 2 to 3 minutes then go to next step. If fluid in reservoir is not cloudy, go to next step.
- Turn ignition to LOCK position. Connect clear hose to right rear caliper bleeder valve. Pump brake pedal 3 to 4 times, then hold in depressed position. Open bleeder valve on caliper, then pump brake pedal until clean, air free stream of brake fluid is discharged. Repeat steps for left caliper.
- With ignition in LOCK position, depress brake pedal repeatedly until brake pedal no longer moves. Turn ignition to ON position, then quickly depress brake pedal 20 times. Observe HBB pump motor operation. When pump motor stops operating, go to next step.
- Turn ignition to LOCK position. Rapidly depress brake pedal until brake pedal no longer moves. Turn ignition switch to ON position while observing HBB pump motor operation. If pump motor stops operating within 25 seconds go to next step. If pump motor fails to stop within 25 seconds, repeat step 5 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then connect Scan Tool (MB991502) to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. From SYSTEM SELECT menu select ABS, then select ACTUATOR TEST - AIR BLEED.
- Depress and hold brake pedal. Activate actuator test by selecting AIR BLEED (1). When scan tool confirms that AIR BLEED (1) is completed, select AIR BLEED (2). When AIR BLEED (2) is completed, go to next step.
- Bleed brake calipers again in following order: RR, LR, RF, LF. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Depress brake pedal rapidly until brake pedal no longer moves, then release brake pedal. Check brake fluid level is between MIN and MAX marks on brake fluid reservoir. Adjust as necessary.
