Test No. 2: Tachometer Does Not Work: Galant

  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DTC P0300 is not displayed, go to next step. If P0300 is displayed, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Check speedometer. If speedometer is not operating normally, refer to SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK  . If speedometer is working normally, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Start engine and run at idle. Using DVOM, measure voltage between harness side terminal No. 15 (White wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Voltage should be 10 volts. If voltage is okay repair or replace instrument cluster printed circuit board or tachometer. If voltage is not 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Check ignition failure sensor (2.4L engine) or distributor assembly and automatic compressor controller (3.0L). Also check instrument panel connectors and wiring harnesses. Repair or replace as necessary.
