Test No. 2: Tachometer Does Not Work: Eclipse

  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DTC P0300 is not displayed go to next step. If P0300 is displayed See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Check speedometer. If speedometer does not operate normally, refer to SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK  . If speedometer operates normally, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster connector Using DVOM, measure resistance between harness side terminal No. 27 (Black wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If resistance is more than 2 ohms, check instrument cluster connector and harness wiring. Repair or replace as necessary. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, check ignition signal input. Start engine and run at idle. Using DVOM, measure voltage between harness side terminal No. 33 (White wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is 10 volts or more, repair or replace instrument cluster printed circuit board or tachometer. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Check ignition failure sensor (2.4L engine) or distributor assembly and automatic compressor controller (3.0L engine). Also check instrument panel connectors and wiring harnesses. Repair or replace as necessary.
