Diagnostic Procedure (3.0L)

  1. Disconnect rear HO2S connector (right bank rear HO2S on California vehicle). Check resistance between rear HO2S connector (component side) terminals No. 3 and 4 (Federal), or No. 1 and 3 (California). Resistance should be 11-18 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace rear HO2S, then go to step  7 .
  2. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and rear HO2S connector terminal No. 3 (Federal) or No. 1 (California). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wire between rear HO2S and MFI relay, then go to step  7 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Check right rear HO2S connector. Repair as necessary, then go to step  7 . If connector is okay, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect ECM 35-pin connector C-51, or PCM 35-pin connector C-52. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 26, or PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 26. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wire between rear HO2S and ECM/PCM, then go to step  7 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Check ECM connector C-51, or PCM connector C-52. Repair as necessary, then go to step  7 . If connector is okay, go to next step.
  6. Connect ECM connector C-51, or PCM connector C-52. Start and warm up engine. Backprobe and check voltage between ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 26, or PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 26, and ground. At idle, voltage should be 9-11 volts. When engine is being revved, voltage should be 9 volts or more. If voltage is as specified, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT DTCS  under CIRCUIT TESTS. If voltage is not as specified, replace ECM/PCM, then go to next step.
  7. Remove all test equipment and install all disconnected/removed components. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Test drive vehicle following other monitor drive cycle pattern. See OBD-II DRIVE CYCLES under VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Check for DTCs. Confirm DTC P0141 does not reset. See VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
