Diagnostic Procedure (3.0L)
- Disconnect front HO2S 4-pin connector. Connect Special Test Harness (MB991658 for Federal vehicles; MD998464 for California vehicles) to front HO2S connector (sensor side). On Federal vehicles, check resistance between front HO2S connector terminals No. 3 and 4. Resistance should be 11-18 ohms at 68°F (20°C). On California vehicles, check resistance between front HO2S connector terminals No. 1 and 3. Resistance should be 4.5-8.0 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Replace front HO2S as necessary, then go to step 7 . If front HO2S is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. On Federal vehicles, check voltage between ground and front HO2S connector terminal No. 3. On California vehicles, check voltage between ground and front HO2S connector terminal No. 1. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wire between front HO2S and MFI relay, then go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition off. Check front HO2S connector. Repair as necessary, then go to step 7 . If connector is okay, reconnect HO2S connector, then go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM 35-pin connector C-51, or PCM 35-pin connector C-52. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 3 (Federal), ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 4 (California), PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 3 (Federal), or PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 4 (California). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wire between front HO2S and ECM/PCM, then go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition off. Check ECM connector C-51, or PCM connector C-52. Repair as necessary, then go to step 7 . If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Connect ECM connector C-51, or PCM connector C-52. Start and warm up engine. On Federal vehicles, backprobe and check voltage between ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 3, or PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 3, and ground. On California vehicles, backprobe and check voltage between ECM connector C-51 terminal No. 4, or PCM connector C-52 terminal No. 4, and ground. With engine warmed up and idling, voltage should be 9-11 volts. When revving engine, voltage should be 9 volts or more. If voltages are as specified, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT DTCS under CIRCUIT TESTS. If voltages are not as specified, replace ECM/PCM, then go to next step.
- Remove all test equipment and install all disconnected/removed components. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Test drive vehicle following other monitor drive cycle pattern. See OBD-II DRIVE CYCLES under VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Check for DTCs. Confirm DTC P0135 does not reset. See VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
