Driver-Side Air Bag Module System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 1995 Eagle Talon, 1995 Dodge Avenger, and 1995 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, read and understand all air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Shield cable terminal. Wait at least 60 seconds before servicing.
  2. Remove rear console assembly for access to SDU connectors. See Figure . At SDU connector, use a screwdriver to push lock spring horizontally (toward SDU) to unlock lock lever (DO NOT insert screwdriver between lock lever and lock spring). See Figure . Press and hold lock lever in and disconnect SDU Red 2-pin connector (clockspring harness) and SDU Red 14-pin connector. See Figure . Remove and inspect clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under COMPONENT TESTING.
  3. Connect SRS Check Harness (MD991530) connector No. 1 to clockspring harness connector. Double-lock the connector. This simulates driver-side air bag module resistance. Reconnect negative battery cable. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Connect MUT-II to DLC. Turn ignition on. Erase codes. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then turn ignition on again. If Code 21 or 22 is no longer present, go to step 4). If Code 21 or 22 is still present, go to step 5).
  4. Check clockspring connectors. If connectors are damaged in any way, replace SRS wiring harness. If connectors are all okay, turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then turn ignition on again. If SRS warning light comes on and stays on, replace driver-side air bag module. If SRS warning light comes on for about 7 seconds, and then turns off, SRS is functioning properly. Check for intermittent wiring problems.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect SRS check harness connector No. 1 from clockspring harness connector. Connect SRS check harness connector No. 1 to terminals 1 and 2 of SDU. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If Code 21 or 22 is no longer present, replace SRS wiring harness. If Code 21 or 22 is still present, inspect front impact sensors. See FRONT IMPACT SENSORS  under COMPONENT TESTING. If impact sensors are faulty, replace as necessary. If impact sensors are okay, replace SDU.
