Removal (2.0L DOHC)

  1. Remove protective cover from below engine. Remove A/C and power steering hose mounting bracket. Support engine. Remove upper engine mount located near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump.
  2. Remove drive belt tensioner. Remove upper and lower timing belt cover with gasket. Note bolt lengths and locations. Remove breather hose, PCV hose and center shield from valve cover. Disconnect spark plug wires from spark plugs.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  rotate crankshaft counterclockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine).
  3. Remove rocker cover and semi-circular packing (located at rear of rocker cover). Remove rubber plug. Rotate crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) until all timing marks align and cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. See Fig 1.

  4. Remove automatic tensioner. See Fig 2. If timing belt is to be reused, mark timing belt to indicate original direction of rotation. Remove timing belt. Remove tensioner pulley, tensioner arm and idler pulley (if necessary). Inspect sprockets for damage.
  5. To remove camshaft sprockets, hold camshaft hexagon (between camshaft journals No. 2 and 3) while removing camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove camshaft sprockets. Remove silent shaft access plug from cylinder block. Insert .31" (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver to block left silent shaft. See Figure. Remove oil pump sprocket nut and sprocket.
  6. Remove bolt, washer, crankshaft sprocket and flange. Note direction of flange installation. Remove rear timing belt tensioner assembly. Remove rear timing belt. Remove right silent shaft sprocket with spacer. Remove rear crankshaft sprocket, key and inner cover.
