Installation (1.8L & 2.0L SOHC)

  1. Lubricate camshaft lobes and camshaft bearing journals, and install camshaft into cylinder head. Install lash adjuster in rocker arm (if removed). Install lash adjuster retainer.
  2. Ensure rocker arm components are installed in original location and wave washers are properly positioned. See Fig 1. Rocker arms for cylinders No. 1 and 3 are marked 1-3. Rocker arms for cylinders No. 2 and 4 are marked 2-4.

  3. Install bearing cap No. 1 on rocker arm shafts so cut areas face away from camshaft area. See Fig 2. Ensure front mark on each bearing cap faces timing belt. Ensure bearing caps are in correct numerical order. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  at end of article.
  4. Coat lip of camshaft oil seal with oil. Install seal into cylinder head using Seal Installer (MD998364) on 1.8L, and Seal Installer (MD998306) with Guide (MD998307) on 2.0L.
  5. Remove lash adjuster retainers. Apply sealant to inside of semi-circular packing and cylinder head before installing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
